The Sumter Community

Sumter County, South Carolina has a vision for the future, a vision where families, schools and businesses not only coexist, but act in symbiotic fashion. Our collective Community Vision is "A family-oriented community that excels in the world market." Following this vision, we seek to strengthen both our families and our businesses through well-laid plans and strategic actions.

It's also a great place to raise a family. With a population of about 106,000 in the Sumter County Metropolitan Statistical Area, Sumter County has the population to support most big city amenities like museums, theatres and music venues. But at the same time we're small enough to retain the feel of Small Town, USA.

Sumter County is home to an arts and cultural scene that has seen a lot of growth in recent years. For instance, Sumter's Little Theatre recently completed a million-dollar expansion, while the City of Sumter began hosting live comedy shows at the Historic Opera House.  We're also home to some world-class nature-based amenities, like Manchester State Forest, Poinsett State Park and Woods Bay State Natural Area. These public places feature equestrian activities, hiking, boating, kayaking and other healthy, family friendly activities.

Sumter County is located in the heart of South Carolina, with the City of Sumter just 44 miles east of the state capital, Columbia. The deep-water ports of Charleston are located just 100 miles south, while the booming Greenville area is 145 miles northwest.  One of the greatest stretches of beaches in the world, the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand is about 100 miles east of Sumter while the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Mountains are 175 miles northwest.
