Cardiac Care
No one knows better than Tuomey the importance of diagnostic testing to anticipate cardiac problems and the ongoing treatments needed to help patients recover from cardiac events. Tuomey's cardiac care program features a wide variety of non-invasive, diagnostic procedures to monitor cardiac performance, including EKG 2-D echocardiography, 24-hour Holter monitors, and TEE's or trans-esophageal echocardiograms.

Our cardiac rehab program at Tuomey Medical Park features three phases designed to facilitate a patient's recovery. A combination of monitored exercise, nutritional education and educational programs are employed to develop a sure-fire plan to regain (and sustain) cardiac health.

Emergency
When people suffer life-threatening injuries or illnesses, our Emergency Department (ED) has the technology and expertise to see them through the crisis. Each of our ED physicians is a specialist in emergency care, and all are either board-certified or board-eligible.

We recently renovated Tuomey's ED to accommodate the more than 42,000 patients coming to us annually for urgent care. Our physicians treat everything from cut fingers and broken bones to major traumas and cardiac emergencies, and we work to get you back home, or admitted to the hospital if needed, as quickly as possible. Our ED is at the core of Tuomey's ability to deliver life-saving care - efficiently, thoroughly and in a comfortable setting.

If you have an urgent medical problem or have a condition you anticipate worsening to an emergency before you can see your primary care physician, please come directly to Tuomey's ED (or in severe cases, call 911 for an ambulance). Immediate care is often the difference between full recovery and continuing problems. If you need access to a primary care physician but do not have one, please contact Tuomey at (803) 774-8663. We will gladly give you the names of Tuomey physicians who can help you outside of the ED.

Home Services
Tuomey Home Services bring quality healthcare to patients in the comfort of their own home. The program is specifically geared toward those who are homebound and in need of a skilled service on an intermittent basis. Patients may receive care from a registered nurse, rehabilitation therapist, social worker or home health aide according to their physician-directed plan of care. The goal of the service is to meet the unique healthcare needs of each patient and their family using a holistic approach.

Imaging
Tuomey's Imaging Department offers the finest diagnostic and interventional equipment available, placing a powerful arsenal of diagnostic tools at our physicians' disposal. X-rays are one of the most frequently employed and well-proven diagnostic tools available. Tuomey has further enhanced the ability of this traditional imaging method with digital X-rays, which produce a much sharper image. And in a move to increase our physicians' ability to quickly and accurately diagnose patients' health situations, we purchased and implemented the PACS computerized storage and retrieval system. It allows clinical staff to view X-rays, MRI and CT scans from multiple locations, to electronically manipulate them to enhance diagnosis, and to transmit the files to other facilities or physicians if needed.

The Outpatient Imaging Center offers the latest in noninvasive testing procedures in a comforting, cheerful environment. Conveniently located in Tuomey Medical Park on Alice Drive, the center provides an outpatient location for MRI, CT scan, ultrasound and X-ray - some of the most powerful and commonly used diagnostic tests available.

The center features an open MRI unit, which many patients find more comfortable than the traditional enclosed unit. Housed in a window-lined suite, this open unit is particularly useful for assessing cartilage and ligament damage to the knee and shoulder joints. And the center's ultra-fast CT scanner makes taking pictures of your entire body painless, fast and thorough.

Oncology
Cancer is a terrifying word, but Tuomey's Jeanne C. Watson Oncology Unit is here for patients who have to face the reality of the disease. The unit is designed to put life-saving technologies to work in an environment that treats the whole patient, and it allows patients and their families to stay close to home for superior care and ongoing treatments.

Our 24-bed oncology unit features spacious and airy rooms, a satellite pharmacy - which makes dispensing chemotherapy drugs easier and faster - and a light-filled solarium for patients and their families. A conference room located beside the unit is available for educational opportunities offered by the oncology staff, and our consultation room offers a quiet, private setting for patients to discuss treatment options. A noteworthy advancement is our ability to monitor patients undergoing stem cell transplant treatment. This process offers yet another treatment option for patients who have not responded well to traditional methods.

Because we understand that prevention and early detection are the most powerful tools our community has to combat cancer, Tuomey is actively involved in outreach programs related to the disease. Our oncology staff regularly leads breast, prostate and skin cancer screenings, as well as bone marrow donor drives. These professionals also present programs to the public to raise awareness of sickle cell, colon cancer and other oncology-related topics.

For detailed information on our state-of-the-art cancer treatment equipment, protocols and facility, read about our Cancer Treatment Center, located across the street from Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Pediatric
The 24-bed Children's Center at Tuomey Regional Medical Center was designed and built with our youngest of patients in mind. From the moment you enter the center's hallways, encountering colorful crabs, tropical fish and dolphins along the way, you will see ours is an environment designed to put children at ease.

Our commitment to caring for the total needs of children and their families extend to the design of inpatient pediatric rooms. Our family suites accommodate both the child and an accompanying parent for extra security during a stressful time. The center also features a bright and cheerful playroom, offering a fun and secure area where children can enjoy toys, games, books and puzzles. That's important, because we know that children often feel well enough to play before they're ready to leave the hospital. Our facilities help them make the transition from hospital to home more smoothly.

The Pediatrics Department is proactively involved with children in the community as well, working closely with Sumter Safe Kids to prevent childhood injuries.

Subacute Care
In 1996, Tuomey opened the area's first subacute skilled care program. The unit provides short-term recuperative and restorative care to patients who are ready to be discharged from the hospital's acute care unit, but not yet ready to return home. The program bridges the gap between illness or surgery and reestablishing the patient's level of independence.

In bringing a complete continuum of acute and subacute care to our community, Tuomey makes it possible for patients to receive full treatment and rehabilitation services in one unit. The addition of the subacute skilled care program means that patients who previously had to be discharged to a distant rehabilitation center or to their home before they were ready, can now remain in the hospital to receive the transitional care they need.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at Tuomey Healthcare System
Medical rehabilitation is an extension and support of acute care. Often, rehabilitation determines the individual’s future quality of life and vocational and recreational opportunities, while deterring secondary medical complications. It takes recovery to its ultimate level by giving individuals who are experiencing catastrophic illness or injury both opportunity and hope for restoring their functional independence.

Through the efforts of an interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals, patients are taught the necessary skills to care for themselves and return to a normal and viable lifestyle. The treatment team may include a physician, rehab nurses, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker, and the patients and their family members themselves.

Because each person’s needs are unique, individualized treatment programs are developed based on the patient’s physical limitations, abilities and goals for recovery. Treatment may address areas related to mobility and strength, performance of activities of daily living, communication skills and swallowing function. The ARU serves patients recovering from a variety of medical issues, including: stroke, amputations, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s closed head injuries multiple trauma, spinal cord injuries, hip fractures, as well as, hip and knee replacements.

The ARU serves thousands of patients from the midlands to the Pee Dee of South Carolina each year. You can choose where you go for your rehab stay. Be sure to let your doctor or case manager know where you want to go. They can help you get care on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Tuomey Healthcare System. Your stay on the ARU is covered by Medicare and most private insurances.

For more information, please call 803-774-9574 for admissions information and screening or 803-774-9476 for the Program Director.
